EU-CaRE stands for a EUropean study on effectiveness and sustainability of current Cardiac Rehabilitation programmes in the Elderly.

Cardiac diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. The reduction of this disease burden may be due to the modern medical progress but also, and mostly by the cardiovascular risk factors control (tobacco, cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, stress, physical inactivity, obesity, etc.). After a cardiovascular event, the prevention needs a complementary work between doctors and patients through a medical management and behavioural changes.

Cardiac rehabilitation is defined as a global management and involves a multidisciplinary program including: stop smoking, nutritional counseling, psychologic aids, work resuming counseling, physical training, patient education and daily life advice.

The beneficial effects of exercise training are now widely recognized: participation on cardiovascular risk factors control, improvement of quality of life and reduction of mortality and reduction of re-hospitalizations. After an acute coronary event, a personalized physical training program needs a precise cardiologic evaluation. The long term efficacy requires a regular practice.
